A sailor by trade, his name appears on five rôles of the French East India Company. Like many crew members on French ships, Joseph was not French, and his travels were surely not limited to French ships. In fact, it is unclear how he travelled from his birthplace of Portugal to Brazil, where he enters the French record. But, apparently, for much of his twenties, he worked on French ships, even (if it is the same Manuel Joseph) volunteering on a French ship during the Seven Years' War, despite France being at war with Portugal. He travelled as far afield as Brazil, Bengal and Madagascar,and he ended up a prisoner of war in England.
